2014 A Toast To Four Diamonds

A Wine, Beer & Chocolate Tasting event to benefit the Four Diamonds Fund

Christopher Millard's valiant fight against cancer was the inspiration for the creation of The Four Diamonds Fund. His three year battle ended on December 21, 1972, and on that same day his parents founded the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.

Shortly before his death, Christopher wrote a story of a medieval knight's quest for four diamonds - courage, wisdom, honesty, and strength.  These diamonds are what was needed to overcome an evil sorceress. Christopher's family believed the story was symbolic of his fight against cancer and identified the characteristics he needed in his cancer battle.

Four Diamonds covers all expenses for the care and treatment of the children not paid for by insurance or other means.  It also supports staff members who provide comprehensive care and provides monies toward research projects that relate to pediatric cancer conducted at the Penn State College of Medicine.  All of this is made possible thanks to the generosity of donors, including 100+ individuals,
Mini-THONs, and THON.

Because of the community's steady and generous support, Four Diamonds has been able to assist 100% of the pediatric cancer patients who have been treated at Penn State Hershey.

On January 31, 2014, Jay Paterno spoke of how he learned, during a pre-tour of the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital, that 1 in every 5 children have cancer.  When he thought about that and the five children he has, he tried to imagine which one of his five kids he could live without.  His response was a blunt "none."

That evening marked the Capital Area Chapter's third annual Chocolate, Beer, and Wine Tasting at the Hershey Chocolate World and the first sell-out in the event's short-lived history with over 140 people in attendance!  Guests enjoyed chocolate-inspired hors d-oeuvres, pre-tasting drinks, and wonderful pairings of Hershey's chocolates with an impressive wine selection from The Vineyard at Hershey, or beer from Lancaster Brewing Company and Troegs Brewing Company, respectively.

On top of hearing from Jay Paterno, former Penn State assistant football coach and longtime Four Diamonds supporter, guests also heard remarks from Suzanne Graney, the Director of the Four Diamonds Fund -- both of whom spoke about how the Four Diamonds Fund has impacted their life.

After a memorable evening, the Capital Area Chapter is proud to announce in all, the Chocolate, Beer, and Wine Tasting raised $5,000.00 towards the fight against pediatric cancer, a 500% increase from last year's total!

The Capital Area Chapter would like to thank everyone who made this figure possible.  The Capital Area Chapter would also like to extend a special thank you to the following event sponsors, whom without the event would not be possible:

  • Evans Engineering, Inc.
  • Fulton Bank
  • Harrisburg Stampede
  • Hershey's Chocolate World
  • The Vineyards at Hershey
